i recall talking about desire vs. necessity quite a bit here on this blog for various reasons. today, i present a formulation of Middle Path that could possibly reap Rewards and help Confused Ones like myself move towards Enlightenment with greater ease.

it is part of the Great Economic Struggle - that of unlimited wants and limited resources (a la scarcity). unlimited wants, or in this specific case, desires, is driven by greed and the insatiable need for More and Better in our lives. it is only human to Desire. it keeps us going, amongst other things, it motivates us to strive for something that could be completely unattainable (think True Enlightenment).

then there is limited resources - in this case, how limited our human capacity is. sure, this could always be solved by invoking some sort of Higher Power that Might listen to you and grant your desires of your heart (think Psalm 37:4). in such cases, human Inadequacy is buffed by Omnipotency. but we must remember that whilst there might be some Mighty Plan, as Humans (and not Omnipotent Beings [even though this might be highly debatable]) we are limited in our abilities.

thus, the titanic struggle between what we want and what we need. at this point, a booming angmoh voice in my head from the days of prefect councillorship goes "peiyi ah peiyi, there is a difference between what you want to do and what you need to do. you can think of so many things that you can do and want to do for something, but there's only so much you can and need to do in the end."

so at this point, the Middle Path doesn't seem to be able to exist - after all, there is a clear distinction between the two, a middle path would merely be the line segregating the two; there simply are no possible subsets of A and B. the chances of P(A | B) appear to be zero. this is where the Middle Path shall transcend the Barrier between the two and merge what you need and what you want into you needing what you want or you wanting what you need!

(this is the point where things get much messier and screwed up you have been warned).

technically: needing what you want and wanting what you need is essentially the same - they both describe similar necessities and desires. if you need what you want (needing the desire), you transform the desire into necessity instead. if you want what you need (desiring the necessity), you're essentially drooling after what you need (to give a sense of how One would Want a Need).

of course, disclaimer: this is not the only classification of compulsions, it merely is easier to see things through a dichotomy.

but now, we break the dichotomy and make it a trichotomy instead - because we can. or rather, somehow, things have a way of evolving and changing to challenge preconceived mindsets (even this, perhaps, in the future!). this is actually all based on empirical observations - that things can change and become into both desire and necessity. it happens through a happy confluence of conditions and equal reactions that are required to set things in motion. it might seem dangerous, after all, desire is idealistic in nature and necessity is pragmatic - quite a paradox we are facing. but it is possible, simply because the Human Spirit is not limited.

when something can be and should be, somehow it will be in the end. if you desire something so much, it could just turn into something you need in the end. and based on perspectives, it could be bad or good. if you think it bad, you'd do all you can to stop it and try to prevent it from happening sooner, afraid of the possible weaknesses you might gain and expose yourself to from this decision. or you could let it be and take things as they come and let your desire help you and guide you through it all.

and at the heart of it all, is whether you're willing to trust yourself and your desires - because humanity again is fickle and stupid that way we promote monogamy and have affairs out of wedlock. principles, trust and faith, then come in, as we then try to make use of such happy confluences of fate and turn it into something beautiful.
